About Us

Cumberland Bedding Company was founded in February 1982, It all started with a vision from a certain Mr Alan Warr, ortherwise known as "Al".

This firstly is where the "wise old owl" came from, which today, still after this time is the company logo.

Mr Stephen Faint, first worked for the company in 1982, after leaving school very early he worked his way up from the bottom firstly making a good cup of tea was the first "trick of the trade" now after 27 years he is very proud to be the proprietor of Cumberland Bedding Co

Cumberland Bedding Company used a large shed behind a shop that was located in Stratford, East London. The Shed came with a covered alley-way which "Al" sold the beds and stored some stock which was to be made into beds.

Then after 3 long years "Al" took on the shop in front of the shed where there could be a permanent showroom and somewhere for clients to lie down and feel the quality of the beds.

After working seven days a week becoming a part of the local community Cumberland Bedding Co was finally making a name, that the local community knew and trusted with making good products at great prices, and then disaster stuck...

A rouge fire work on the bonfire night tore through the sky and landed......in the alley-way........by the time the fire crews got to the shop the fire was rageing after a very long night Cumberland Bedding Company was teetering on bankruptcy.

"Park Lane" became our refuge not the Park Lane in central London, but in Stratford just off the high street. It was a two story building with a annex on the side, a state of the art factory after the "shed" we came from. We had very good customers who stuck buy us who we are forever grateful, but we kept going strong, then when the roof was coming of in a almighty storm but tieing some 6'-0" bundles of springs to the rafters secured it until the roofers could fix it properly.

"Silvertown" We moved to a larger premises in silvertown, still in the east of London, "nowhere like home" this was a cold and damp place to work. We was at this stage in the business growing we had even purchased a "tufting machine" after hand tufting for many years this machine saved us lots of blisters and unwanted piercings.

"Woolwich Ferry" Was our first "proper" factory unit, even had ladies toilet facilities and a canteen...... we was very busy at this time making beds for many different companies from wall beds to sofa beds and also ventured into Pocket Sprung Beds. Which we know all too well now. We purchased our first large vehicle had it sign written four weeks later it was stolen...back to square one again.

"River Road" After a difficult time in Woolwich in which a major customer went into receivership we had no choice but to down size to a unit in River Road Barking, back to a cold and damp place of work our staff were amazing travelling further for work and sometimes for short periods of time. We knew this was a stop gap to bigger and brighter things...

"Stratford" We moved to Stratford in 1999 this felt like we had made the full circle after starting the business there in 1982 we finally "came home" We heavily invested in machinery and new vehicles but most of all our staff, which in any good business is the main core. we stayed he for a great 5 years, as soon as Mr Jacques Rouges of the Olympic committee said "LONDON" we knew our time was up, as the factory's foot print was on the running track in the main stadium.

"Dagenham" We located to Dagenham in 2005 after battling the LDA about being forced from our last location, we was very lucky we had the chance to plan our factory, to place all the machinery where we wanted it, not just where it would fit.

"Present Day" At the time of today we are very lucky to have meet so many people in the trade, especially our customers & suppliers, but most of our staff, which we highly value. We see our company going from strength to strength and only the future will tell......... Here’s to the next chapter...........
